⚙️ OUTBOARDS

Chris Jefferies wrote a piece for Motor Boat and Yachting covering 11 electric outboard motors. From smaller fishing motors with 0.8 hp through to 300 hp for bigger boats.

The electric outboards feature various design choices, some looking similar to gasoline outboards and a couple utilizing a newer form factor.

Looking to the future, the author suggests several of the major marine manufacturing companies are planning to launch electric outboard motors in the relatively near future.

Available for sale, the Solar Sal is a 24 foot by Solar Sal Boats. With a capacity for 10 people, this boat has a cruising speed of 5 knots. Adorned with 4 360 Watt solar panels, the sun is the only power source, providing infinite range (4 -5 knots) while the sun is shining. Up to 9 hours at cruising speed using batteries (presumably at night).

The Princeton Electric Speedboating, a team of undergraduate and graduate engineers at Princeton, set the electric speed record of 114.2 mph on October 26, 2023 on Lake Townsend, North Carolina. This is a student run lab with a mission to promote the creation and viability of electric boats.

The Pro-Outboard Hydroplane, named Big Bird, measures 14 feet in length and delivers 200 horsepower (peak) and weights 990 pounds.
